The Ngadirejo Village in the district of Probolinggo, East Java, suffered considerable ashfall due to the prevailling N-NW winds. I visited the nearby village of Ngadirejo (Probolinggo district) in the disaster zone is one of the most affected and almost buried under a layer of ash. The heavy ash fallout has caused potable water and power shortages, collapsed dwellings, destroyed crops and surrounding vegetation and affected livestock. Although the air is thick with volcanic ash there are limited numbers of face masks being made available and no protective eyeware so people have to do without, despite the known health risks. Mount Bromo was still erupting when I left on Feb 19th 2010 and there are no indications that it's about to stop.
